Gambling in the State of New York

New York is one of 48 states with legalized gambling. It has a diversified gaming industry. There are tribal and commercial casinos. Some casinos are slots-only. There is also retail and mobile sports betting, live, off-track, and mobile betting or horse racing, a state lottery, charitable gaming, and daily fantasy sports contests.

The last New York gambling expansion took place in 2022. That is when mobile sports betting launched in the state.

Commercial and tribal casinos in New York State

There are nineteen licensed casinos in the state of New York. Seven are tribal casinos and seven of the commercial operations have racetracks. Video gaming machine players must be at least 18 years of age. Video lottery terminals, slots, video poker, video keno, and electronic table games are considered video gaming machines.

Minimum age 18 years

Commercial properties without table games have a minimum gambling age of 18. Six of these eight casinos also have racetracks. Alcohol may be consumed by guests 21 years of age or older.

Most New York State tribal casinos have a minimum age of 18. These properties are permitted to have live table games.

Akwesasne Mohawk Casino – 873 State Route 37, Hogansburg, NY

Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort is located in upper New York State near the Canadian border. This tribal casino offers 1,150 slot and video poker machines, live and electronic table games, bingo, and a sportsbook. There are five dining options, 150 hotel rooms, and 18 RV sites on the property. The casino is open Wednesday through Sunday.

NY retail and mobile sports betting

Mobile sports betting is the latest form of legalized gambling in New York. It went live in 2022. Retail sports betting existed before that at tribal casinos. Most casino properties have a sportsbook and/or betting kiosks. Many have a sports bar or lounge to view games.

Licensed mobile sportsbooks include FanDuel, BallyBet, BetMGM, DraftKings Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, Wynn Interactive, Points Bet, Resorts World Bet, and Rush Street Interactive (BetRivers).

Online gambling options in New York

In New York, sports wagers may be placed online or using mobile apps including daily fantasy sports contests. Sweepstakes contests are also allowed in the state. These games are free to play. However, players may purchase additional gameplay.

NY live horse racing

New York has eleven horse racing tracks. Four host thoroughbred races, while the other seven host harness races. Horse bettors must be 18 years of age or older.

Simulcast betting is available at racetracks and licensed off-track betting locations.
