On June 30, Play Maverick Sports announced that its online and mobile sportsbooks ceased operations, effective immediately. The company said at the time that its retail sportsbooks would remain open. Kiosks continued to operate at all three of its Colorado casinos. Grand Z Casino would staff its ticket counter during major events, according to the June 30 statement.
This week, a Black Hawk casino patron tweeted that the sportsbook at Z Casino had a sign saying it is closed. US Casino Advantage reached out to Grand Z Casino this morning. It is the flagship of the three Maverick Gaming casinos in Colorado. An employee confirmed that the entire Colorado sportsbook operation was permanently closed. There are no more kiosks on any of the company’s Colorado properties.
The June message that alerted players to the mobile app closing was edited. It no longer encourages players to place wagers at kiosks on its casino properties. The sportsbook website no longer displays lines. All sports are deleted from the menu. All odds pages are blank. These pages were maintained during the weeks that Maverick operated retail betting after closing the online and mobile sites.
The Colorado Division of Gaming shows Maverick Sports available at retail locations in Black Hawk and Central City. The list of active operators is here. However, it seems this is just an oversight.

Colorado is down to 11 retail sportsbooks
With Maverick Sports kiosks closed, Colorado is down to ten commercial retail sportsbooks. There are nine in Black Hawk and one in Cripple Creek. There is a retail tribal sportsbook open at Ute Mountain Casino for a total of 11 Colorado retail sportsbooks. That number was 16 on June 1, 2023. There were at least 20 in the early days of legal Colorado sports betting. Four Cripple Creek casinos removed sportsbook kiosks in the last couple of years.
Four Colorado online sportsbooks ceased operations in the last six weeks
As US Casino Advantage first reported last week, multiple small Colorado online sportsbooks folded. In early June, Elite Sportsbook closed its online operations and kiosks at Red Dolly Casino on the outskirts of Black Hawk. Sky Ute closed its online and retail sportsbooks on June 30. Both voided all futures bets.
Like Sky Ute, Maverick closed its online sportsbook operations on June 30. At the time, Maverick stated that its futures bets would be honored.
PlayUp appears to be on its way to being defunct in Colorado. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement revoked PlayUp’s New Jersey online gaming licenses. You can read the emergency order from New Jersey regulators here.
PlayUp’s Colorado sportsbook site is still live. However, it seems unlikely that it can continue operations after Legal Sports Report discovered the company is not paying withdrawals and other liabilities. Colorado and New Jersey are the only states where PlayUp has sports betting operations.
Update: PlayUp is closed in Colorado.
Be careful placing futures bets in Colorado
We don’t recommend making any deposits at PlayUp, even if the site still operates. Players with funds on deposit should request an immediate withdrawal, in our opinion. This is based on how at least two of the Colorado sportsbooks that closed in June voided all futures bets. You may get into a freerolling situation on bets that could be voided as Colorado has not shown that it requires shuttered operators to honor existing wagers.
Colorado sports bettors should be careful about placing any futures bets with small operators that are still in the state. Considering online sportsbooks at the bottom of the market seem to be leaving it, there is too much risk involved with leaving money tied up on these sites, only to have them cease operations. This leaves players in a situation where their best hope is a refund.
Stick to large sportsbook operators who you know will be around next year when placing a futures bet. Otherwise, you may end up freerolled, something regulation was supposed to prevent.
